20 August, 2004- Pukkelpop, Belgium

review by Dave

We travelled from Liverpool to Belgium to see this. Now this may seem a little strange or over the top but I couldn't pass up the chance to see Lanegan and the Twilight singers on the same stage. A 9 hour train journey, a drunken night in Hasselt and about 20 Croque Monsieur later we went to the festival. After seeing great sets from Elbow and Mondo Generator with the latter seeing Mark take the mike briefly Mark Lanegan came on. If I remember right they started out with Hit the City followed by Wedding dress. As No Easy Action was kicking in I looked to the side of the stage and there was Greg Dulli getting into it. Forgive me if I cannot remember the set list but Willie John was a particular highlight and he only played songs off the last 3 albums the highlight was when Nick Olivieri and Greg Dulli came on at the end for Methamphetamin Blues, the "I'll do it daddy bit was genuinely godlike", and that was it. Short but worth the travelling. So then we went and ate waffles and drank watery beer and smoked more Lucky Strike and caught Deus and some strange cult type bongo band in the world tent. The Twilight Singers were the last band of the night and were a party band again. Lanegan joined them for Strange Fruit and my mission was complete. As Faded finished so did I. 2.30 in the morning, a great day. Thank you Belgium, you make wonderful waffles.
