It all started for me around 18:45 when I met a dozen of friends in the bar called "Le Charbon" (The Cole) just next to "Le Nouveau Casino" (The New Casino). Let me explain a few things before. First, the Venue. Le Nouveau Casino is a small Venue (400 people) created in 2001 by the Peripheriques-Architectes agency (http://www.peripheriques-architectes.com) It was created behind a famous bar "Le Charbon" and the two places are connected and belong to the same manager. You can sea pictures of the two places below... So I arrived in Le Charbon, and ordered a few beers for my friends and I, when known faces appeared in the place and sat on the big bench you can see next to the Casino's entry on the picture below : The band was just having their dinner just next to us ! They all came (Shelley, Michael, Brett, Norm and Ed, plus members of the staff). A few minutes later, Mark came into the bar too, very deconstructed, a carton of Camel Cigarettes in his hand and a little smile on his face. He sat with the others for dinner... A good friend of Mine, Max, offered them a bottle of good French red wine. They were all in a very good mood, very excited about the tonight's show because London's show was brilliant.

A few beers later, we went in the Nouveau Casino, already full but we easily found our way to the front of the scene.... After a short wait, at around 20:30, the guys came on stage and the best show I've ever seen in my life began with "Hit the City".... The Mosh Pit quickly went absolutely mad, people began to jump every where, to crowd surf and to yell like demented at the end of each songs ! We could see on the band's faces that they really were amazed by the crowd and that we were giving them a tremendous energy for their play. Mark was in a very great mood, and he kept his eyes open nearly all the time, we could even see a little smile on in face while singing! More than this, he was posing for the photographs, and even winked to a girl next to me pointing at her with his finger.... He thanked us very often and introduced every member of the band. No big surprises in the setlist but really great and powerful songs :

hit the city
wedding dress
creeping coastline of light
no easy action
miracle
one hundred days
message to mine
sideways in reverse
one way street
come to me
resurrection song
driving death valley blues
I'll take care of you
Little willie john
skeletal history
methamphétamine blues

when your number isn't up
pendulum
sleep with me
fix

The real Crazyness began exploded with Sideways by reverse and never ended after... Brett Netson who was standing just in front of me nearly felt down in the crowed while he was playing so close to the edge of the stage trying to unite with us : crazy people headbanging on his guitar play.... Michael, on the other side of the stage gave us extraordinary psyche solos.... And Shelley... wow ! What a girl, What a voice ! She seemed so happy and kept smiling and laughing to the messed crowd... The end of Fix was awesome two... mark left the stage quite early saying good bye and running out, but the band stayed on stage and began a never-ending jam ! Brett and Norm wouldn't stop playing if the others hadn't finally left the stage.... Amazing !

I was in Amsterdam and I cant tell you that this show was more than a hundred times better !

And then came the After show ! Michael and Shelley were the first to come out and join the fans at the venue's bar. They were given an ovation, and the others came out too : Ed, Brett and finally Norm. Mark never came out. I got to speak with each members about the show, and other things. They all agreed to say that it was their greatest gig on the European tour at this time, never seen such a mosh-pit, never received such an energy... They told us they would be back in Paris in November for sure, but didn't know which venue yet. Probably a bigger one, even if Shelley told me she loved this venue... I spoke about the Amsterdam show with Norm who told me that it was not a very good show for two reasons : first the crowd was too quiet, and two : it was one of the first shows of the tour, and they had to learn 25 songs very quickly so they were not really ready at this time. But things got really better just after Amsterdam... he also told me that he was recording every shows with his MD, but that he was very disappointed because he couldn't find it tonight and didn't record this great Paris Gig.... He also confirmed me that the Brussels' show in November 2003 (where I was and spoke to Mark ;o)...) had been one of the greatest. Anyway, they were all upset because they really had a great time in Paris but couldn't stay longer because they had to go straight to italy by night and sleep in the Tour bus...

There it is... Paris show is unforgettable.... Hope to see them again soon : in November !!!

Too bad I had not my camera, but lots of people took pictures anyway.... I joined a picture of my ticket signed by Shelley, Ed, Mike and Brett....

review by King Of Queens

This is it. Mark Lanegan was playing a solo show for the first time in Paris, even in France. It has been 10 years that I was waiting for that event. The 'Nouveau Casino', a really nice venue for a rock show, was sold out and many people had to stay in front of the doors. I was supposed to interview Mark for the radio where I'm working, but maybe two minutes before I arrive to the hotel, a man from Beggars called me to tell that the interview was cancelled. Whatever, it's the music which counts.

As the supporting act was cancelled, the show started really early in the night, around 8.00pm. The 300 people who were there acclaimed Mark as he entered onstage. Except the fact that he's not very talkative between songs, (maybe a few "Thank you" and "see you next time", Mr Lanegan delivered a very strong performance, very charismatic. He was more into the show than I ever see him, even dancing sometimes. His voice was amazing as usual but it's not surprising anymore.

The band was helped by the perfect acoustic and sound engineering. Classical setlist for this tour, no surprises but real highlights: powerful renditions of Sideways in Reverse, Message to Mine, Driving Death Valley Blues, a wah wah version of Like Little Willie John sounding like a Screaming Trees song, and really touching versions of Sleep With Me or Ressurection Song. But to my opinion, Skeletal History was the best song played this evening. It sounded awesome and I'm starting to think that it's maybe his best song, at least when it's performed live.

So, the show was excellent, except that I think they should add Because of This to the setlist. Anyway, it was great to see Mark Lanegan in Paris. It was also great to see french fans, waiting for this show for years, really into Mark's music. To conclude, I just want to tell a word about the line up. The woman Shelly Brien is tattooed, and she did not sing out of tune! It's not PJ Harvey but she really fit well in the set! But the real star in this band is Brett Netson. I really liked his attitude during the all show. At the beginning of Fix, he started to have guitar problems. I don't know if he was high or something but it took him 3 minutes to realise that he was not playing. The roadie gave him another guitar and he played again, showing his finger to the sound engineer who was making fun of him. Brett was the last to leave the stage, trying to grab a fan on it, unsuccessfully but concluding a great show.
Thank you Mark, thanks to the band for this great night.
